Creating a Cultural Safe Haven in the Classroom - IGC 668

IGC 668: Creating a Cultural Safe Haven in the Classroom
Instructor: Casey Rekowski
Format: This course is a one-week summer intensive. An entire graduate class will be completed in one week, so please leave ample time to complete assignments each day. This is an online course that takes place remotely and all coursework is completed asynchronously. There are no zoom sessions.
Description: This course will provide teachers with the opportunity to explore topics such as bias, racism, sexism and xenophobia and other controversial cultural conversations that happen in our classrooms. Teachers will gain a more in-depth awareness of these diverse topics, feel better prepared to address students' social-emotional concerns and engage students in these discussions. Educators will share their experiences related to these topics by collaborating as professionals, asking questions, and developing strategies to implement in their schools. This course is meant to help facilitate these conversations among school leaders. Therefore, teachers will be able to use this platform to discuss and address cultural-isms that arise naturally with students
